No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
