European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
